Jerry Dean Tippy

October 7, 1934 — March 4, 2014

Herrin- Jerry Dean Tippy, age 79, of Herrin, passed away at 10:00pm on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at Herrin Rehab and Nursing Facility.  Jerry was born in Number Nine, IL on October 7, 1934, the son of Zollie and Rhea (Russell) Tippy. He married Glenda Shepard in Herrin on March 18, 1955. Together, they shared fifty-eight years of marriage. She survives in Herrin.  Mr. Tippy formerly owned and operated the Clark Gas Station in Herrin in the early 1960’s, but retired as a coal miner at Freeman and Old Ben Mines where he worked several different positions. He was a proud United States Army Veteran and served his country during peacetime while stationed in Hawaii.  Jerry enjoyed playing cards, especially poker, fishing at Crab Orchard or local strip cuts, lifting weights, playing Bingo and dancing with his wife Glenda at the Eagles or other local dance halls.  Survivors include his wife- Glenda Tippy of Herrin Daughter- Jerri Lynn and Charles Charlet of Herrin Daughter- Jami Lou and Jerry Hampton of Carterville Six Grandchildren:             Charles Dean Charlet and wife Heather of Herrin             Kerry Lynn Charlet and fiancé Amy of Herrin             Jared Lee Charlet of Herrin             David May of Carterville             Jessie May of Carterville             Megan Hampton of Carterville Six Great Grandchildren             Ashton Charlet             Brianna Charlet             Alysah Charlet             Trysta Charlet             Kendal Yates             Brayden Yates             Dax May             Mason May             Sister- Ibbie Jean and Thomas C. Boren of Herrin Several cousins  He was preceded in death by his parents, son- Darrell Scott Tippy, and one grandson- Chad Len Charlet.  As per his wishes, Mr. Tippy will be cremated. A private graveside service will be held at HerrinCityCemetery at a later date.  Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin is assisting the family with final arrangements.  Memorial donations are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association and will be accepted at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home/ 201 S. 13th St./ Herrin, IL   62948.
