Alberta J Racine Simpson

d. July 14, 2003

Marion Alberta June Worley Racine Simpson, 81, died Sunday, July 13, 2003 at 9:00 P.M. at her home. Alberta was born June 07, 1922 in Royalton to Ernest and Vivian (Lloyd) Worley. She married Tony Racine in 1948 and he preceded her in death in 1979. Alberta married Cleatus Simpson on March 17, 1990 in Murphysboro. After graduating as the valedictorian of her high school class, Bert, as she was known to friends and family, joined the Herrin Hospital as a nurses aide and lived with other young women in what was then known as the Nurses Home. Because of her ongoing interest in medical librarianship, Bert accumulated sufficient knowledge and experience to successfully complete the required examination for hospital librarian and became the director of medical records of Herrin Hospital where she served for 48 years, until her retirement in 1990. Upon her retirement, Bert had the longest period of continuous service to Herrin Hospital of any employee at that time and the medical records library was named The Alberta Racine Medical Record Library in her honor. In her role as a medical librarian, Bert was instrumental in establishing a superior department at Herrin Hospital that established a benchmark for best practices in medical records organization and administration throughout Southern Illinois. As a result, Bert consulted with more than a dozen hospitals in the area in order to ensure excellent medical records practices throughout the region. She also trained many medical records personnel and directors and held administrative positions in the Illinois Medical Records Association, which honored her as the Outstanding IRMA Member in 1977. Bert served as President of So. Illinois Medical Record Association twice and was a 5 time delegate to The American Medical Record Association House of Delegates. Bert was a member of the First Church of God of Marion and a member of the Delta Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.
