Alexis ShyAnn Hopkins-Mezo

Herrin- Alexis ShyAnn "Lexi Bear" Hopkins-Mezo, 6, of Edwardsville, formerly of Herrin, died at 10:37 PM, Saturday, June 30, 2001 at Union County Hospital in Anna. Alexis was born on July 12, 1994 in Carbondale, IL to Brandon "Deano" & Brandy (Mezo) Hopkins. Alexis was a student, having just graduated the first grade, at Parrish Elementary School in Carbondale. While a student, President Bush awarded Alexis the President's Academic Excellence Award. She also received an award for reading over 600 minutes of books. Alexis enjoyed playing sports. She played T-Ball and was the first girl in her class to play little league football. She loved playing outside with her pets and was a member of Girl Scout Troop #94 in Herrin. Alexis looked forward to attending church and was a member of Christian Covenant Fellowship in Carterville. She was quite active in Children's Church and participated in all of the Easter and Christmas programs. Her favorite songs to sing, aside from any song by Brittany Spears (whom she dressed up as for Halloween) was "Jesus Loves Me" and the "Itsy Bitsy Spider". All her family and friends will miss her love and caring nature. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, July 4, 2001 at Christian Covenant Fellowship in Carterville. Rev. Ralph Brandon will officiate. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Carterville. Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 3, 2001 from 5:00-9:00 PM at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Memorial donations may be made to Christian Covenant Fellowship "Children's Church" or to Mothers Against Drunk Driving and will be accepted at the funeral home.
