Alice Violett of Marion, Illinois passed away surrounded by her family in the late morning of May 3rd, 2011. Alice was born August 6th, 1920, to W.A. and Byrd Mathis. Alice was survived by her daughter Ann Moore and son-in-law Larry Moore. Alice was also survived by her grandson, Greg Mayer and his wife Monica of Lubbock, Texas, and her granddaughter Carrie Bourdow and her husband Tony of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Alice is also survived by her great grandchildren Tyler Mayer, and Jenna, Emily, and Nick Bourdow.
Alice graduated from Southern Illinois University where she was one of the first Saluki cheerleaders and then began her teaching career in many one-room schools before Marion became a consolidated school district. Since becoming a teacher in the Marion Unit 2 schools, Alice taught at Creal Springs Grade School and then Washington Elementary School in Marion. After a 38-year tenure in education, Alice retired in 1978. Alice was a charter member of Delta Theta Tau teachers sorority and an active member of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ.
She was an avid University of Kentucky basketball fan and often returned to her Alma matter for Saluki basketball. Alice had a zest for life and will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
Funeral services will be Thursday, May 5, 2011 at 1 P.M. at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Rucker officiating. Burial will follow in Fountain Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 10 A.M. until the time of service at the funeral home.
