Herrin- Benny J. Calcaterra, 86, of Herrin, passed away at 6:39 PM, Friday, April 13, 2007 at Herrin Hospital.
Benny was born on September 19, 1920 in Clifford to Joe & Antoinette (Carnaghi) Calcaterra. He married Regina V. Perotta on February 8, 1964 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Herrin.
Mr. Calcaterra served his country bravely in the US Marine Corp while stationed on Midway Island during Word War II. He was a marksman and gunnery sergeant when he was honorably discharged.
He worked thirty five years as a route salesman for Southern Illinois Wholesale in Herrin. He retired in 1990. Benny was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church and a former Third Degree Grand Knight of the Knight of Columbus. He was a former member of the Pigeon Inn, Rome Club and the VFW & American Legion in Herrin.
He enjoyed sharing stories about the past and spending time with family.

Daughter- Lisa A. Calcaterra of Herrin
Step Daughter- Elizabeth Wagley and husband Fred of Herrin
Step Daughter- Celena Jones and husband Don of Las Vegas, NV

Sister- Rose Burgess of Highland Park, IL
Four Nephews
He was preceded in death by his parents and niece; Mara Ann.
The funeral mass will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, April 16, 2007 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin. Monsignor Ken Schaefer will officiate. Burial will follow at San Carlo Cemetery. Military rites will be performed at graveside by the Herrin VFW & American Legion Posts. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until time of mass Monday at the church. Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin has been entrusted with funeral arrangements.
