Herrin- Bettie E. Smith, age 90, of Herrin, passed away at 1:05pm on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at her home in Herrin. Born Beatrice Elizabeth Davies on January 4, 1924 in Herrin, Bettie was the daughter of David “Dye” and Beatrice Elizabeth (Hanson) Davies. She married Edward Smith in Perryville, Missouri on December 7, 1941. He preceded her in death on December 19, 1992. Bettie worked at Maytag (Norge) in Herrin for 38 years. She was an avid bowler, winning many awards and trophies. She loved spending time with her bowling family each week. Bettie enjoyed working with the flowers in her yard, and loved the help received from her great grandchildren. Survivors include her son- John E. Smith of Herrin One daughter- Barrie E. Penninger of Herrin One sister- Anita M. James of St. Louis, MO Grandchildren- Stacey Penninger of Herrin Tracey and Philip Skuta of Farmington, MO Jody S. Threlkeld of Herrin Amy Jo and Stephen Flowers of Riverton, IL Nicole and Karl Gusentine of Energy Great Grandchildren- Samantha, Tabithia, and C.J. (Charles) Skuta of Farmington, MO Karli, William, and Brittney Gusentine of Energy Mason Flowers of Riverton, IL Niece- Pat James of St. Louis, MO Nephew- David and Cathy Davies of St. Louis, MO Many other Nieces and Nephews Two brothers-in-law- Wayne Smith of Mulkeytown and Ira Lee Smith of Herrin Her constant companion “Duke” who never left her side She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, grandson- Paul Penninger, two brothers- Archie and Horace Davies, daughter-in-law- Angela Smith, and one son-in-law- Robert (Bob) Penninger. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses of Hospice of Southern Illinois, including Brandie, Randall, Katrina, and Kathy. Your kindness and compassion will always be remembered and appreciated. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin with Rev. Ralph Brandon officiating. Burial will follow at Egyptian Memorial Gardens in Energy. Visitation will be held from 5-8pm on Friday, March 21, 2014 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. For those who prefer, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois. Envelopes will be available and accepted at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home; 201 S 13th Street; Herrin, IL 62948.
