Herrin- C. Ardell Grimes, 93, of Herrin, passed away at 6:05 AM, Saturday, June 16, 2007 at Herrin Hospital.
Ardell was born on September 4, 1913 in Cambria to William & Rosa (Williams) Grimes. He married Pearl Winchester on September 6, 1936 in Benton. She preceded him in death on January 5, 2005.
He worked at Zeigler Coal from 1941-1976 until his retirement. He was a safety coordinator for the state of Illinois and he was on the Mine Rescue Team from 1951-1976. Ardell was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Herrin and formerly served as usher and volunteer pallbearer.
Mr. Grimes served as Alderman of Ward 3 in Herrin for twelve years from 1963 to 1975. He was a member of the United Methodist Mens Group, United Mine Workers of America, C.C. Camp, Crab Orchard Boat Club. He also served on the board of directors of Bonnie Holiness Camp and as secretary of his local UMWA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son; Gary Grimes, two sisters and two brothers.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, June 19, 2007 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Pastor Ed Hoke and Rev. Don Colson will officiate. Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-9:00 PM, Monday, June 18, 2007 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin.
Memorial donations are suggested to Herrin First United Methodist Church Building Fund or Bonnie Holiness Camp and will be accepted at the funeral home.
