Herrin- CARL EDWARD BRANDON, age 66, of Herrin, formerly of Riverton, passed away peacefully at 2:28am on Tuesday, July 31, 2007 at Herrin Hospital, surrounded by his brothers and sisters.
Carl was born in Herrin on February 27, 1941, the son of Clyde Pat and Mabel I. (Brown) Brandon. He was a graduate of Sunnyside Grade School and Herrin High School.
Mr. Brandon was a member of the Christian Covenant Fellowship in Carterville. He was a US Army Veteran, serving in Germany from 1963 to 1965. Carl was a longtime employee of the Illinois Department of Transportation in Springfield, retiring in 1998.
Mr. Brandon delighted in the company of family, particularly his nieces and nephews, with whom he engaged in epic wiffle ball and miniature golf games. A highlight in Brandon family history is his unassisted triple play in a kids vs. adults ball game. His triumphs in miniature golf were celebrated with a victory lap around the ice-cream parlor. For the past several years, Carl organized massive Easter egg hunts at his home for neighbors and relatives.
An animal lover, Carl had several dogs, notably his beloved Tuffy. He also raised bantam chickens in his retirement. His hobbies included country-western dancing, bingo, and trips to the boat. He enjoyed extensive travels with his sister.
