Marion Carolyn Ann (Smith) Brien, 76, passed away on Sunday, April 22, 2007 at 11:05 P.M. at her home. Carolyn was born December 23, 1930 in Murphysboro to John W. and Thelma (Coad) Smith. Her parents died when she was a child and she was raised by her aunt and uncle, Cecil and Ruby Acker. She married James E. OBrien on February 7, 1952 in Herrin and together they have shared over 55 years of marriage. Mrs. OBrien was formerly employed as a seamstress and in retail clothing sales. She was a 1949 graduate of Herrin Township High School where she was a cheerleader. She enjoyed crafts, gardening, sewing, fishing, dancing and bowling. She had many friends who enjoyed her laughter, her warmth and her smile. She is survived by her husband, James of Marion, Two daughters, Ellen OBrien Todroff of Herrin and Cindy OBrien Lee of Rockhill, SC. Two grandchildren, Megan Rebecca Todroff of Pasadena, CA and Cory Wallace Lee of Marion. Sister, Phyllis Madden of Royalton. A very special friend of the family, Kerry Spitzenberger, of McConnells, SC and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded by her Parents, one sister, Doris Gerdes, three brothers, John W. Jack Smith II, Robert Smith, and Charles Smith and her aunt and uncle Ruby and Cecil Acker. Funeral services will be Friday, April 27, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion with Rev. Mike Neubert officiating. Burial will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 5:00 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. For those who prefer memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois.
