Caswell E. Peebles

Carbondale- CASWELL EUGENE PEEBLES, age 89, formerly of Pittsburg, passed away on Friday, July 13, 2012 at his home in Littleton, Colorado. Gene was born in Pittsburg, Illinois on August 11, 1922, the son of Dewey and Myrtle Peebles. He married Geneva Celeste Calcaterra on June 8, 1946 in Washington D.C. and together they danced their way through 61 years of marriage. Mr. Peebles attended the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Carbondale for many years, was a graduate of Southern Illinois University and was Director of Business Affairs at the University for many years. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, wife, and brother (Lorin "Spide" Peebles). Survivors include his children: Daughter Janis Johnson of Littleton, CO Two sons: Jim Peebles of Long Beach, CA, and Gene Peebles of Palm Springs, CA Four grandchildren: Casey Johnson of Denver, CO Rex Johnson of Littleton, CO Susan and Janis Peebles of Long Beach, CA Five great grandchildren: Kenley, Keatyn, and Brecken Johnson of Denver, CO Melinda and Kayla Johnson of Littleton, CO A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, July 28, 2012 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin. Monsignor Ken Schaefer will officiate. Burial will follow at San Carlo Cemetery in Herrin. Military rites will be performed at graveside by the Herrin VFW and American Legion Posts and the Illinois National Guard. Visitation will be from 6-9:00 PM, Friday, July 27, 2012 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. The rosary will be recited at the funeral home Friday at 6:00 PM. Memorial donations are suggested to the Alzheimers Association and will be accepted at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home/ 201 S. 13th St./ Herrin, IL 62948.
