Charles F. "Fred" Richey

June 11, 1927 — December 21, 2020

Charles F. “Fred” Richey, age 93, of Pittsburg, passed away peacefully at 3:49 pm on Monday, December 21, 2020 at the Carrier Mills Nursing Home with his loving family by his side.

Fred was born at home in Stonefort on June 11, 1927, the son of Darwin and Ruby (Roper) Richey.  He married Helen Etherton on June 11, 1950 in Crab Orchard and they shared over 57 years of marriage.  She preceded him in death on August 8, 2007.

Fred was a member of Center Baptist Church in Crab Orchard. He retired from Freeman Coal Company.  Fred was a proud World War II Army Veteran who was also a member of the Marion American Legion Post 147, the United Mine Workers of America, the Williamson County Farm Bureau, and the Southern Illinois University Alumni Association.

Survivors include his children and grandchildren:

Dan & Pam Richey and their children, Sybil (Andrew) Young and William Richey

Tom & Cheryl Richey and their children Sarah (Andrew) Head, David (Aisha) Richey, Gregory (Katie) Conte, and Rachel (Ryan) Rose

Polly & Mark Brinker and their children Jennifer (Nathan) Sharbono, Kurt (Mandy) Brinker, Melissa (Wade) Poole and Heather (Jason) Kees

22 great grandchildren with two more on the way.  

Preceded in death by his parents, wife, and brother- Ted Richey.  

Funeral services will be held at 12pm on Monday, December 28, 2020 at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion with Pastor Jason Kees officiating. Burial will follow in Coal Bank Springs Cemetery with military rites presented by Marion VFW Post #1301, American Legion Post #147 and the National Guard Flag Detail Unit.  Visitation will be held from 10-12pm on Monday, December 28, 2020 at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home.


Due to health concerns related to the COVID-19 virus, social distancing and the wearing of masks will be required

For those who prefer, memorial donations may be made to the Carmi Baptist Children’s Home & Family Services. Envelopes will be available and accepted at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home; 800 N. Market Street; Marion, IL 62959.
