Herrin - Charles Hugh Hogan, 62, died at 5:40 PM, Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at his home in Herrin. He was born February 25, 1943 in Rosiclare to Charles and Geneva Ferrell Hogan. He married Effie Bess Passas on February 23, 1969 in Lancaster, PA. She survives of Herrin. Mr. Hogan was a 1961 graduate of Herrin High School and received a Bachelor of Science degree in police science and criminology in l974 from York College, York, PA. He joined the Army in 1963 and was a veteran of the Vietnam War where he served from 1966-1968. He received the bronze medal star for meritorious achievement in ground operations against hostile forces in Viet Nam. He served 20 years with the Lancaster Bureau of Police of Lancaster, Pa from 1974-1994. He was a patrolman for 9 years working on foot, in a cruiser or on a motorcycle. He was a detective for 11 years. He investigated all types of criminal offenses. After his retirement in 1994 he opened Alpha Omega Investigative Services in Lancaster. He managed and operated this business until he returned to Herrin in 2001. He owned and operated A-O Investigative Services in Southern Illinois until 2004. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. He enjoyed boating on the Chesapeake Bay, motorcycle riding, playing pool, golf and dancing. He was a weekly volunteer at the Marion VA Medical Center and he loved watching old westerns and war movies. He was a member of the Herrin Elks Club, The Crab Orchard Golf Club in Carterville, The GWRA (Gold Wing Rider's Association of America - Chapter Q-Carbondale and the Blue Knights of Herrin and AHEPA Chapter #71 (American Hellenic Education Progress Association) and the Lancaster Annunciation Orthodox Church. He is survived by his wife, Bess Hogan of Herrin, two daughters and one son in law, Halane Elizabeth Hogan, Elyria, Ohio, Nina and Ryan Thiele, Philadelphia, PA, one son, Charles Hugh Hogan II, Goodyear, AZ., three grandchildren, Nina Rose Marley, Elyria, Ohio, Chelsea Lynn Hogan and Charles Hugh Hogan III, Oklahoma City, OK and his God son, Vinnie Phemister, Mt. Vernon. He is also survived by two sisters and one brother in law, Virginia Crouse, Herrin, Kay and John Brown, Carterville and sisters in law, Diana Stamatakos, Baltimore, MD, Vaso Passas, Columbia, PA, niece, Kim Brown, Marion, IL and nephews and their families, Jett Crouse, Herrin, Brett Crouse, Johnston City, Kevin Brown, Cambria and great nephews, Kerry Nissley, Columbia, PA and Steven Stamatakos, Sykesville, MD He is also survived by a host of good friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. Please join the family in celebrating the life of Charles Hugh Hogan at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, July 26, 2005 at Johnson Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. The Rev. Maurice Swinford will officiate. Entombment will follow at East Lawn Memorial Gardens in Energy with full military rites by the Marion VFW & American Legion Post. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home on Monday, July 25, 2005. An Elks Memorial Service will be held at 7:00 p.m Monday at the funeral home. During his 10 years in the military he was devoted to duty, honor and country; his 20 year law enforcement career was dedicated to serving and protecting his community of Lancaster, PA. He took care of all of those he loved in the same way. He will be missed by his family and his larger family of work associates and his friends both on the East Coast and in his native Herrin. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Charles Hugh Hogan may be made to the Hope Lodge Center, 4215 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63108 or the Herrin Civic Center.
