Herrin- Charles Kovach, 86, of Herrin, formerly of Chicago, passed away at 3:05 AM, Sunday, March 23, 2014 at Herrin Hospital.
Mr. Kovach was born on August 23, 1927 in Royalton to Charles and Julia (Kudzei) Kovach.
He bravely served his country while enlisted in the United States Coast Guard during WWII. Once honorably discharged, he began a forty year career at the Indiana Harbor Belt in Riverside, IL as a railroad car inspector. He retired in 1990.
He enjoyed working with wood and building birdhouses and chairs in his spare time. He liked to go to garage sales and find items to fix and refurbish. He was a member of the Illinois Brotherhood of Railway Workers and an avid St. Louis Cardinal’s baseball fan. He will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him.

Daughter in law- Teresa Kovach of Beecher

Keith Kovach of Cary, NC
Brother- Michael Kovach of Carterville
Sister- Mary Goss of Carbondale
Sister- June Grozik of Boise, ID
Several nieces, nephews and cousins
He was preceded in death by his parents, son- Michael W. Kovach, two sisters and two brothers.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Monsignor Ken Schaefer will officiate. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until time of service, Wednesday, at the funeral home. A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, March 28, 2014 at Skyline Memorial Park in Monee. Friends and family are asked to meet directly at the graveside.
