Herrin- Charles R. Giese, 79, of Herrin, formerly of Elgin, died at 3:20 PM, Thursday, February 6, 2003 at Herrin Hospital. Charles was born on April 1, 1923 in West Chicago, IL to Frederick & Edith (Aye) Giese. He married Gertrude Wright on March 9, 1968 in Geneva, IL. Mr. Giese was a WWII Army veteran, serving from 1943-1945 in Northern Frances, Ardennes, Rhineland, and central Europe. For his service, he was rewarded the bronze star. He worked as a lineman for the Chicago Northwest Railroad before he retired in 1985 as a maintenance equipment operator for the State of Illinois. Charles belonged to the Baptist Church in Elgin. He was a member of the Elgin VFW & American Legion Posts, the Fox Valley Region chapter of the Model A Restorers Club. He & his son David, enjoyed restoring a 1930 Model A Ford 2 door sedan. He also enjoyed his grandkids (which he never allowed to be spanked), model trains, and talking on his CB Radio. He was known as "Gear Jammer". Survivors: Wife- Gertrude Giese- Herrin Daughter & son in law- Virginia & Thomas Hazelett- St. Charles, IL Dau & son in law- Linda & Douglas Foster- Coarse Gold, CA Daughter- Sheryl Soderdahl- Kearney, NJ Son- David Giese- St. Charles, IL Ten Grandchildren Nine Great Grandchildren He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and beloved miniature poodle; "Buffy". The funeral service will be at 10:00 Am, Monday, February 10, 2003 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Rev. Ken Tiffin will officiate. Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery. The Herrin VFW & American Legion Posts #1301 will perform military rites at the graveside. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM, Sunday, February 9, 2002 at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the Herrin First Church of God and will be accepted at the funeral home.
