Charles R. Shostrom, 89, of Indiantown, Florida, formally of Marion, passed away at 10:10 a.m. Monday, September 8, 2014 in Stewart, FL.
Charles was born in Mt. Vernon, IL on May 24, 1925 to Raymond and Florence (Jones) Shostrom. He married Karlee Collins Delia in 1971 and enjoyed 43 of years of marriage. She survives.
Charles was a graduate of West Frankfort High School Class of 1943, and attended University of Illinois on a basketball scholarship until he was called to serve in the US Army in World War 11. After serving in the military he returned to college and graduated with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from LSU.
He worked as a plant engineer for Norge and Tuck Tape for over 40 years. After retirement, he and Karlee moved to southern Florida, with his last 11 years in Indiantown, but returned to southern IL during the summers for many years. In Florida, he continued to make great friends, play golf and enjoy life.
Charles enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren and he especially cherished his time he spent with his many friends hitting the links at the Franklin County Country Club and the Jansco's Stardust Golf and Country Club. He was proud of his induction into the Illinois Basketball Hall of Fame, and his 4 holes in one.
Survivors include wife, Karlee, of Indiantown, FL; two daughters and son-in-laws, Karen and David Caraker of Herrin; Elaine and D.J. Johnson of Lake of Egypt; one son and daughter- in-law Eric and Vicki Shostrom of Fort Worth, TX; two stepsons and daughter-in-laws, Steven and Ellen Delai, Micheal and Donna Delai of West Palm Beach, FL.; Eight Grandchildren, Mitch (Amy) Griffith, Drake Caraker of Carbondale, Kolbie (Jeff) Stuck of Carterville, Silas Johnson of Mt. Vernon, Cody Shostrom, Brittany Shostrom of Ft. Worth, Tx., Devon Delai, Giana Delai, John Robert Delai, Felcia Delia all of West Palm Beach, Fl.; two great grandchilden, Syndey Stuck and Daniel Delai; one sister Maxine Jurkiewicz of St. Louis, Mo.; one special cousin Alfred Dartt of Orient, IL.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father.
A memorial service in Charles’ honor will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, September 20, 2014 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Rev. Karl Barnfield will officiate. A time of visitation will be held from 1- 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
