Charles Willet Lukens, 91, of Marion, passed away at 9:48 AM, Friday, February 26, 2010 at Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion.
Charles was born on May 13, 1918 in Massac County to Charles W. & Mary Eva (Herring) Lukens.
He enlisted in the US Navy and was a veteran of WWII and the Korean Conflict. Charles served in the South Pacific as a gunner and crew member on several of the Navys PT Boars. Once honorably discharged he worked many years until his retirement as Director of Food Service Operations at SIU-C and before that at Indiana University.
He was a member of the SIU Alumni Association, Marion VFW, West Frankfort Moose Lodge, Murphysboro American Legion and the PT Boats National VFW. He served as Post Commander and District Commander of the 15th District.
Survivors include-
Daughter- Anita Young & husband Ralph of Waverly, IL
Daughter- Kay Etherton of Louisiana
Daughter- Pat Damron & husband Ron of Murphysboro
Six grandchildren
Nine Great Grandchildren
One Great Great Grandchild
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers- Infant & Glen Lukens and sisters- Lois Hopper, Ruth Grahan & Doris Mason.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, March 20, 2010 at Liberty Ridge Cemetery in Massac County with Rev. Shorty Alsip officiating. Military rites will be performed at graveside by the Marions VFW Post #1301, American Legion Post #147 and National Guard Flag Detail Unit. Arrangements were made at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion.
Memorial donations are suggested to St. Judes Childrens Hospital and will be accepted at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home/ 800 N. Market St/ Marion, IL 62959.
