Herrin- Clarence Dexter Woody Woodring, 72, of Herrin, passed away at 10:15 AM, Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at his home. Woody was born on April 27, 1940 in Rosiclare to Jerold and Audrey (Radcliffe) Woodring. He married Joanne E. Shelford on March 21, 1964 in Hurst. She survives of Herrin. Woody proudly served his country while enlisted in the US Navy from 1960-1964. Once honorably discharged, he began a 25 year career with General Telephone Company, which ended in retirement. He then worked in the Hurst Police Department and retired after 16 years of service. Woody was a great man of faith and was a member of the Herrin First Baptist Church. He was also a member of the American Legion. He found great joy in his children and grandchildren and especially looked forward to family gatherings during the holidays. He enjoyed having coffee with his buddies, eating crappie, watching John Wayne westerns and hunting groundhogs. Woody was an adventurous soul who enjoyed flying Powerchutes, riding motorcycles and travelling on cruises with Joanne to the Caribbean. Survivors include- His loving wife- Joanne Woodring of Herrin Three Daughters: Kim Sprague and husband Jim of Energy Kindra Ferrell and husband Richie of Carterville Karna Swalls and husband Matt of Carterville Seven Grandchildren: Derek Strunk stationed at Ft. Briggs in El Paso, TX Ryan and Kaley Ferrell of Carterville Dakota Sprague of Energy Sydney, Austin and Alexi Swalls of Carterville Two Great Grandsons: Christian Castanon of OFallon, IL Blake Strunk of Anna Sister in law- S. Linda Woodring of Newburgh, IN Sister in law- Grace McCuan of Crestwood Several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews He was preceded in death by his parents and brother- Robert Woodring of Evansville, IN The funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, June 1, 2012 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Pastors Mark Hutson and Paul Tirey will officiate. Burial will follow at Blairsville Cemetery in Blairsville. Military rites will be performed at graveside by the Herrin VFW and American Legion Posts and the Illinois National Guard. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until time of service, Friday at the funeral home. Memorial donations are suggested to the American Lung Association and will be accepted at Johnson-Hughes-Funeral Home/ 201 S. 13th St/ Herrin, IL 62948.
