Herrin-Dee H. Bonnell, 84 died 7:00 P.M. on Friday, October 26, 2001 at the Shawnee Christian Nursing Home in Herrin.
Funeral Services will be 1:00 P.M., Tuesday, October 30, 2001 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home with Rev. Duane Faulkenberry and Rev. Ralph Brandon officiating. Burial will follow at the East Lawn Memorial Gardens. The Herrin American Legion & VFW Post will conduct military graveside rites.
Visitation will be Monday evening from 6:00 to 9:00 P.M. at the Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home.

Dee was born November 11, 1916 in Golconda, Illinois to Henry L. & Eva (Lands) Bonnell.
He was married first to Genevie (Clendenon) Bonnell in 1946 in Marion. She died June 27, 1998. He married Jessie (King) Bonnell in March 1966 in Herrin. She died in 1989.
Dee retired from GTE/Verizon after 36 years of service. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army serving during WW II. He was a Tech. Sergeant. During the war he worked in communications. He was in Iwo Jima and helped establish its telephone system after the invasion. He installed the Lifeline Lines for Herrin Hospital for 16 years.
He was a member of the Bryan Street Baptist Church. He served three terms on the Chittyville School Board. He san bass in the local gospel quartet called the Denominaires. He loved people and enjoyed helping people. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinal Fan. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
