Herrin- Denzil R. Walker, age 71, of Herrin, passed away Friday May 13, 2005 at 8:55am at Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, KY.
Denzil was born July 12, 1933 in Herrin to Floyd Grassy and Fern (Compton) Walker. He married Adeline (Toigo) in Marion on November 13, 1964. She survives in Herrin.
Denzil was a standout football player at Herrin High School in the 1950s and was a member of the Class of 1951. He was inducted into the Herrin High School Hall of Fame in 1997.
Mr. Walker was the retired Vice-President, CEO of the Bank of Herrin, and a longtime Herrin businessman, retiring in 2001. He was an army veteran of the Korean War. Denzil was a member of the Herrin Elks, the Pigion Inn, the American Legion, Rotary Club, Herrin Chamber of Commerce, First United Methodist Church, and served on the Herrin Civic Center Board. He was very active in the Herrin community and played an important role in numerous projects, including helping to organize the Herrinfesta Italiana Golf Tournament. He was once asked why he performed so much volunteer work for the Herrin Community, and was quoted as saying Its Just a Way of life. In 2001, he was honored by the Herrin Spokesman as one of the areas Unsung Heroes. Denzil enjoyed golfing at Franklin County Country Club and Crab Orchard Golf Course.

Funeral services will be held at 11am on Thursday May 19, 2005 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin with the Rev. Don Colson officiating. Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery with military rites performed by the Herrin American Legion. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 5-9pm on Wednesday May 18, 2005.
