Dolores Jean McCuan

Dolores Jean McCuan, 88, passed away at 6:39 p.m. Thursday, September 20, 2018 at her home in Marion, surrounded by all of her children. She was born in Rockford, IL on June 30, 1930, to Albert Berkel and Rose (Bayles) Berkel. For 62 years Dolores was the loving wife of Heze L. “Mac” McCuan of Marion who proceeded her in death. She was a devoted mother to their surviving five children, two sons, Michael McCuan of Marion and Patrick McCuan and wife Carole of Herrin; three daughters, Karen Saffelder and husband Neil of Creal Springs, Karla Cox and husband Ray of Marion, and Mary Colleen Hancock and husband Captain Daryl Hancock, U.S. Navy (Ret.) of Collinsville, IL. She was the adoring grandmother to their surviving grandchildren, Corey and wife Jennifer McCuan of Marion, Ethan Hancock of Indianapolis, IN, Elizabeth (Hancock) and husband Jon Henning of League City, Texas, Marleen Hunter of Herrin and Summer Crosley of California; three great-grandchildren, Cortnie Crosley, Alexa McCuan, and Javan Walston; and one great great-grandchild, Aryana Randall. Her brother, Jim Berkel and wife Sue of Dahinda, IL, and brother-in-law Dr. Ronnie McCuan and wife Dawn of Harrisburg; and sister-in-law, Grace McCuan of Crestwood, IL also survive. Dolores was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sisters, Patricia “Pat” Pulley and Rosemary Berkel Crisp; and two grandchildren, Casey Saffelder and Noah Saffelder. Dolores attended schools in Evansville, IN, Creal Springs, and Marion. Before her children were born, she worked at the US Farm Bureau in Marion.  As a mother, she chose to stay at home and raise her five children. As her children got older, she worked as a seamstress for Cubicon, and after her children were grown, she worked in the front office at the VA Hospital in Marion. She was a devoted member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion, and she was a member of The Altar Society and Women’s Guild at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be at Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at 10:30 am at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Marion. Father Brian Barker will officiate. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. The Rosary will be prayed at 10:00 am before the funeral Mass.  Visitation will be from 5 – 8 pm at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion on Monday evening. In lieu of flowers the family prefer memorials may be made to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church or Hospice of Southern Illinois. Envelopes will be available at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home, 800 N. Market St., Marion, IL.
