Herrin- Donald L. Orso, 76, of Herrin, passed away at 1:45 AM, Sunday, October 21, 2007 at home. Donald was born on November 24, 1930 in Herrin to Bob & Sarah (Sowman) Orso. He married Dorothy Duncan and she preceded him in death in 1975. He married Marilyn (Edmonds) Swan on November 20, 1976 in Marion. She survives of Herrin. Donald was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion in Freeman Spur and a lifetime member of the Herrin Elks. Mr. Orso retired from Consol Coal and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America. He was a former Illinois State Mining Board member, a position which is appointed by the governor and he served as marketing representative for the Illinois State Treasurer. Don was a former Alderman for the City of Herrin and a former Democratic Precinct Committee member. Don was of protestant faith. He was saved by Rev. Don Colson during his illness and received final blessings from Monsignor Ken Schaefer. Survivors include- Wife- Marilyn Orso of Herrin Son & daughter in law- Bruce L. & Elizabeth Orso of Herrin Son- Keith Orso of Bush Step daughter- Ivana Jo Swan of Herrin Step daughter & son in law- Consi & Ed Kubitz of Marion Six Grandchildren: Brandi Hudson of Virginia Beach, VA Cody J.W. Hudson of Carbondale Chad Orso of Herrin Curt Orso of Herrin Dylan Orso of Herrin Kyle Orso & wife Megan of Herrin Brother & sister in law- William & Shirley Orso of Herrin Sister- Shirley Patrick of Pickens, SC Sister & brother in law- Reba & Carl Harrison of Herrin Numerous nieces & nephews and many close friends His buddy- Rascal the one eyed cat He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, October 24, 2007 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Rev. Don Colson and Rev. Ralph Brandon will officiate. Eulogies will be given by Lt. Governor Pat Quinn and Cheryl Trench. Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery. Military rites will be performed at graveside by the Herrin VFW & American Legion Posts. Visitation will be from 6-9:00 PM, Tuesday, October 23, 2007 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. The Herrin Elks will perform services at 7:00 PM, Tuesday, at the funeral home. The family would like to extend special thanks for the wonderful care they received from the nurses and staff of the Marion VA Medical Center and Jackson County Rehab and Care. Memorial donations are suggested to Hospice of Southern Illinois or the Elks Crippled Childrens Fund and will be accepted at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home/ 201 S. 13th St./ Herrin, IL 62948.
