Doris Evelyn Shelton Moffett was born October 18, 1929 to Ed and Mae (Easley) Shelton. She passed away on Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at the age of 81 at the Herrin Hospital.
She attended and graduated from Excelsior Grade School in 1942. This was a one room school, and she completed grades 3rd and 4th in the same year. She was named Valedictorian of the graduating class which consisted of every one room school in the District. She then attended and graduated from Salem High School in 1946.
In 1956, she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. In 1963, she was named the Mother of The Year by the MS Society in St. Louis. She served for 6 years as campaign chairman for MS to raise funds to hopefully find a cure. She made many radio and television appearances and worked closely with Ken Boyer of the St. Louis Cardinals. He was the National Chairman at this time. During this time she progressed from paralysis to walking with two canes for over 2 years. She was able to drive with the help of an attachment to the controls. She gradually progressed to walking alone with the help of her family and loved ones, and most of all with the prayers of many people.
In 1970, she became a Charter Member of Emergency Medical Technicians and was one of the first women to work actively on an ambulance, in the State of Illinois. She filled this capacity for 12 years with the Pulley Ambulance Service until the service closed. She then continued to help with the sick in any way she could until her death.
In 1980, she was employed by Orkin Pest Control where she retired as Office Manager and Administrative Assistant in 1995. After retirement she served as Nursery Attendant for the New Hope Church of God for 7 years. She retired from there in 2001 due to her health.
She has been a faithful and active member of the New Hope Church of God in Marion.
