Herrin- DOROTHY L. BERTELS, age 81, of Herrin, passed away at 7:40am on Friday, December 10, 2010 at Shawnee Christian Nursing Center in Herrin.
Dorothy was born in East Saint Louis on July 2, 1929, the daughter of Fred M. and Hazel I. (DeVore) Slack. She married Clark L. Field in East St Louis on September 19, 1946. He preceded her in death. She later married Elmer H. Bertels on November 21, 1960 in Collinsville. He also preceded her in death.
Mrs. Bertels was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Herrin and former member of the Hope Lutheran Church in Highland, where she was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary. Before retirement, she worked as a supervisor for Southwestern Bell in East Saint Louis. Dorothy moved to Highland in 1966 and later made Herrin her home in 1984.

Grandson- Jonathan Gentle of Lake of the Ozarks, MO
Great Grandsons- Quinton and Zachary Bagwell of Carterville, IL
Brother- Albert E. and Dorothy Slack of Freeburg, IL
Sister- Doris O Bequeaith of White Hall, IL
Sister- Ruth M Morris of Fairview Heights, IL

She was preceded in death by parents, husbands, and one brother- Lawrence E. Slack.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm on Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Herrin with Pastor Michael Henson officiating. Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7pm on Monday, December 13, 2010 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home and one hour before services at the church on Tuesday.
