Marion – Dorthea E. Edwards, 83, of Marion, passed away on Friday, January 24, 2014 at 10:42 a.m. at the home of her daughter in Marion.
Dorthea was born in Corinth on February 13, 1930, the daughter of Iber and Madge (Clark) Malone. She married Esco Edwards, Jr on April 30, 1949 in Piggott, Arkansas. He preceded her
Mrs. Edwards attended Pittsburg Freewill Baptist Church. She was a retired medical secretary, having worked for area doctors including Dr. Felts, Dr. Dibble, and Dr. Hyde. Dorthea was an avid Marion Wildcat Athletic and Kentucky Wildcats Sports fan. She was known as “Coach” by many of the kids.
Survivors include her son- Mike and Linda Edwards of Charleston, SC
Daughter- Randi and Mike Houston of Marion
Three Grandchildren- Lt. Commander Tony and Tamzen Edwards of Sicily, Italy
Aaron Edwards of Charleston, SC
Jeffrey Houston of Marion
Four Great Grandchildren- Logan, Sydney, Griffin, and Rylan Edwards of Sicily, Italy
Close friends and caregivers- Erma Boester, Mary McAneley, and Lolita Mitchell of Marion
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
The family extends a special thank you to Hospice of Southern Illinois and to Dorthea’s caregivers who have been the family’s rock.
Funeral services will be Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home with Lt. Commander Tony Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday evening from 5 – 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
