Dr. Donald L. Smothers

Donald L. Smothers, DDS, 81, of Marion passed away at 8:53 Am on Monday, May 14, 2012 in Heartland Regional Medical Center. Funeral services for Dr. Smothers will be held at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 with Reverend Tim Ozment officiating. Interment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion. A time of gathering for family and friends will precede the service from 10:00 AM until the service hour. Memorial donations may be made to the Parkinsons Foundation; envelopes will be available at the funeral home or may be sent c/o Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home, 800 North Market Street, Marion, IL, 62959. Donald was born to Everett & Iva (Fuller) Smothers on Saturday, December 13, 1930. He married Patricia Fry in Crab Orchard on Saturday, February 6, 1954; she survives of Marion. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Patricia; cousins, Jack D. & Pam Smothers of Marion and Charlene & Carol Calendar of Owensboro, Kentucky; grandson, Dalton Lee Smothers of Marion. Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Everett & Iva Smothers and son, Matthew M. Smothers, who passed away in 2008. Dr. Smothers was a graduate of Crab Orchard High School, graduate of the Veterans Administrative School of Laboratory Technology in Nashville, TN, then onto the University Of Missouri School Of Dentistry in Kansas City. Donald was a veteran of the US Navy, and worked as a laboratory technician at Harrisburg Medical Center right out of high school. He was a member of the Lake of Egypt Country Club for over 30 years, member of Bi-County Health Department, the Illinois Dental Association, the American Dental Association, Marion Masonic Lodge, First United Methodist Church of Marion, Ainad Temple Shrine of East St. Louis and the Williamson County Shrine Club. ________________________________________
