Edward L. Corder, M.D. 85 passed away on Monday, February 22, 2010 at 1:39 A.M. at Carbondale Memorial Hospital. Dr. Corder was born October 10, 1924 in Crab Orchard to Edward L. Corder, Sr. and Wreathel C. (Lyons) Corder. He attended Marion Grade Schools through 5th grade. The family then moved to Dykersburg where he attended Black School, a one room country school. Following his graduation from Crab Orchard High School he attended SIU from 1942 1945. Having been asked to teach on a war emergency certificate, he taught biology at Marion High School from 1949 to 1955 and while teaching he finished his Master of Arts degree at SIU. In 1955 he resigned from teaching and returned to SIU to complete his last year of pre-med. He entered the University of Illinois Medical School in September, 1956 and graduated in June, 1960. He spent his summers driving a city bus in Chicago. He interned at Macon County Memorial Hospital for 1 years. In September, 1961 he received his license to practice medicine. He spent the first 2 years of practice in Wenona, Illinois. In August, 1963 he moved to his hometown of Marion and soon had a very busy medical practice (general practice), which included delivering babies, assisting in surgery, and covering the emergency room. In 1974 he joined the SIU Health Service until 1978 and he re-opened his practice at Bethesda Medical Center from 1978 1987. He then moved next to Marion Memorial Hospital on Vicksburg Street, where he re-located his private practice in 1987 thru 1992. He suffered a heart attack in 1991. He then joined the Health Clinic in Carterville for 4 years and then joined the Health Clinic on South Court in Marion for 4 years. From March 2000 thru November 2000 he joined a clinic in Goreville. After making the decision to retire he found that he didnt like retirement, so in May of 2001, he joined Dr. Griffins medical practice for 4 more years. On June 30, 2005, at the age of 80, he finally retired from practice after 43 years of practicing medicine. Dr. Corder truly loved practicing medicine and appreciated every patient. He continued to make house calls and nursing home calls until his retirement. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Murphysboro. He first joined the Methodist Church in April 1943. He taught Sunday School and was Superintendant for 5 years. He loved music and played the trumpet in High School and College Bands. He was a member of the John A. Logan Band for 2 years. He enjoyed playing bluegrass guitar with a group of friends at Arview Music Store in West Frankfort every Saturday. Dr. Corder was the pilot of a Piper Cherokee 160. He was a horseman, and along with his wife, Gloria he went on many trail rides, enjoying camping and traveling all over the United States. Dr. Corder is survived by his wife Gloria of 35 years. Daughters Jan Corder Baldwin of Marion, Judy Corder Briner of Bonita Springs, Florida and Jamie Drake of Dublin, Ireland and son Jeff Drake and wife Shelley of Murphysboro. Two grandsons Casey Baldwin of Marion and Steven Briner of Bonita Springs, Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Bill Corder and son-in-law Jerry Briner. Funeral services will be Thursday, February 25, 2010 at 2 P.M. at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion with Rev. Larry Gilbert and Rev. Earl Renshaw officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 11 A.M. until the time of service at the funeral home. Burial will be Friday at 2 P.M. at Coal Bank Springs Cemetery. For those who prefer memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church of Murphysboro.
