Dr. James R. "Doc" McVicker

Dr. James R. "Doc" McVicker, 72, of Energy, passed away at 4:33 AM, Monday, April 29, 2013 at Herrin Hospital. Doc was born on February 24, 1941 in Danville to Bill and Dorothy (Schroeder) McVicker. He graduated with honors from the University Of Illinois- School Of Veterinary Medicine and was a member of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. He owned and operated Southern Illinois Equine Clinic in Herrin until he sold it to Marc Miles in June of 1994. He married Susan Smith in Hoopeston, IL on June 13, 1964. She preceded him in death on November 13, 1988. He later married Jan Ewer on August 1, 1992 on Horseback at Bear Branch Campground in Eddyville. She survives of Energy. Doc had a love for the outdoors and all that went with it. He enjoyed gardening vegetables and flowers, watching birds and keeping the feeders full, and trail riding on horseback. He also enjoyed camping and fishing for big bass in Florida and travelling with Jan to Hawaii, Europe, the Western US and Florida. In his spare time, he liked playing cards and racquetball and watching St. Louis Cardinals baseball. He was a founder of Herrin Youth Football and actively involved in the Herrin Jr. Ball League. He most enjoyed spending time on his tractors and heavy equipment with Tim. Survivors include- Son- Tim McVicker and wife Kim of Herrin; Daughter- Sarah McVicker of Carterville; Step Daughter- Kendell Wentzel and husband Leo of Asheville, NC; Step Son- Kenneth Youngs of Energy; Step Daughter- Stacy Butler and husband Jim of Harrisburg; Seven grandchildren: Alex, Ashley and Tucker McVicker of Herrin, Chance Ogden and Brock Dresel of Carterville, Loryn Butler of Evansville, Trenton Butler of Birmingham, AL; Brother- Jerry McVicker and wife Elberta of Watseka, IL; Sister- Carolyn Crane and husband Leon of Branson, MO; Several nieces and nephews; Favorite horse- "Charley"; Beloved dog- "Houston"; and Numerous close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife- Susan and mother in law- Caroline Smith. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM, Thursday, May 2, 2013 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Dr. Roger Lyons will officiate. Entombment will follow at Egyptian Memorial Gardens in Energy. Visitation will be from 6-9:00 PM, Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Memorial donations are suggested to the Herrin Junior Ball League and will be accepted at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home/ 201 S. 13th St/ Herrin, IL 62948.
