MARION - Dr. John Scudder, 94, passed away July 31, 2009, in Mayfair House Commonwealth Assisted Living in Hampton, Va.
He was born April 24, 1915, in Kenmore, N.D., to Frank and Florence (Surrat) Scudder.
In 1939, he married Frederica Martin; she preceded him in death in 1960.
He then married Jeanette D. Shillinger. She passed away in 1998.
Dr. Scudder was a graduate of Edwardsport High School in Edwardsport, Ind. He entered Indiana University as an undergraduate and received his DDS from the Indiana University School of Dentristry in 1938. He was head of Veteran's Administration Dental Services from 1946 until his retirement. He was at VA Medical Center from 1957 to 1974 in Marion. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the Indiana National Guard and the U.S. Army from June 1941 to January 1946.
He was a member of First Christian Church in Marion, American Dental Association, Rotary International and was a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge. He also served one term on the Marion Civic Center Board.
Survivors include his children, Suzanne (Randal) Saltzman, Sarah (John) Veneziano, John F. (Ava) Scudder, Carol (Gary) Clark and James (Mary Ann) Shillinger; grandchildren, Matt (Natalie) Clark, Stacie (Toby) Dellamano, Steve Clark, John H. (Sarah) Scudder, Sara (Greg) Amos, Alison (Andrew) Elliott and Jeff (Elizabeth) Shillinger; great-grandchildren Conor and Cameron Dellamano, Madelyn and Sophia Clark, Nathan Scudder, Kennedy Shillinger, Emerson Elliott and Dane Amos; brother, Frank Scudder; and sister, Jeanette Anderson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ralph Scudder; and sister, Virginia Kephart.
A memorial service will be celebrated at a later date.
