Herrin- Boy Scout Master Earl May, 95, of St. Louis, Missouri formerly of Herrin, passed away on Monday, September 20, 2010 at 5:45 P.M. at St. Johns Mercy Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Earl was born July 18, 1915 in Linton, Indiana the son of John Calvin & Lydia Ann May. He married Mildred McNeely on December 31, 1937 in Herrin and together they shared over 68 years of marriage until her death on June 9, 2006. He was a longtime member of the First Apostolic Church of Marion and later a member of the New Life Evangelistic Center in St. Louis. Earl worked at the Orient #1 and #3 coal mines for 43 years. He was a Scout Master for more than 52 years. He received the Silver Beaver award in 1952. Earl held the Scout Master Key, Eagle Scout, God and Country award, and the President award for the Egyptian Council. Has the order of the Arrow for 50 years and attended 12 national jamborees. Survivors include; Daughter Marilyn Tonkinson of St. Louis, Missouri Grandson John Stuart Tonkinson and wife Kathryn of Dallas, Texas Four Great Grandsons James, Henry, Will & Andrew Tonkinson of Dallas, Texas Sister Delores Avery and husband Charles of Herrin Several nieces and nephews Close friend of the family Dan Hance of St. Charles, Missouri Preceded by his Parents, Wife Mildred, Son-in-law Douglas Tonkinson, Brothers Ernie, Harold, George, Kenneth and John May and Sisters Thelma James, Vernie James and Marie Kish. Funeral services will be Thursday, September 23, 2010 at Noon at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin with Rev. R.G. Walls officiating. Burial will follow in Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 A.M. until the time of service on Thursday at the funeral home. For those who prefer memorials may be made to the Egyptian Council of the Boy Scouts or a Charity of your choice. Envelopes will be available and accepted at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home, 20 South 13th, Herrin, Illinois 62948.
