Herrin-Ernest E. Ernie Grounds-83, died 6:51 A.M., Thursday, September 25, 2003 at Herrin Hospital. Ernie was born September 22, 1920 in Logan, Illinois to Clarence & Lillian (Bristow) Grounds. He married Evelyn Edwards on February 12, 1940 at Marion, Kentucky. She survives of Herrin. Mr. Grounds retired from Freeman Coal Company where he worked as a miner. He was a member of the Herrin First Baptist Church and a US Army WWII veteran, having served with the 29th infantry. He was awarded both the Bronze Star & Purple Heart. He was also a member of the UMWA. Survivors Include: His Wife: Evelyn Grounds of Herrin Daughter & Son In Law: Nancy & Edward Wayne Johnson of Freeman Spur Daughter & Son In Law: Janice & Artie Phillips of Herrin Son & Daughter In Law: Frank & Helen Grounds of Benton Son & Daughter In Law: Todd & Elizabeth Grounds of Herrin 15 Grandchildren 19 Great Grandchildren Brother & Sister In Law: A.W. & Louise Grounds of Ferges Brother & Sister In Law: Bill & Juda Grounds of Marion Brother & Sister In Law: Larry & Marilyn Grounds of Herrin Sister: Pauline Frick of Marion Sister: Audrey Haynes of Marion Sister & Brother In Law: Dorthella & Luther Youngblood of Herrin Sister & Brother In Law: Mary & Joe Cockburn of Johnston City Also survived by several nieces & nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Elroy & Richard Grounds, three sisters, Maude Oglesby, Betty Oliver & Arietta Morris. Funeral Services will be 11:00 A.M., Monday, September 29, 2003 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Rev. Paul E. Tirey & Rev. Roger Teal will officiate. Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery. Military rites will be performed at graveside by the Herrin American Legion & VFW Post. Visitation will be Sunday, September 28, 2003 from 6:00 to 9:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Memorials donations may be made to the Herrin Community Food Pantry or the Salvation Army.
