Eugene Gene L. Cox, 90, of Huntsville, Alabama, passed away Tuesday. Mr. Cox was born and raised in Marion, Illinois. He attended the University of Illinois and was a member of Delta Phi Fraternity. After college, he returned to run the second generation family owned furniture and retail business, Cox Hardware and Furniture of Marion. Mr. Cox was also a very active leader in his community and was voted Man of the Year by the Marion Chamber of Commerce. He served as President of several organizations including the Chamber of Commerce and the Lions Club. He was an active Mason and longtime member of the Elks Club. Upon retirement, Mr. Cox moved to Covington, LA, a bedroom community of New Orleans. After hurricane Katrina, Mr. Cox relocated to Huntsville, Alabama to a life care retirement community.
Mr. Cox is survived by daughter, Sally Cox Spencer and husband, Guy J Spencer, Jr., of Huntsville, Alabama; daughter, Nancy Cox de Montluzin and husband, Roch Eugene Edgar de Montluzin, III, of New Orleans, Louisiana; son, Stephen Eugene Cox and wife, Jeanette Cooper Cox, of Nashville, Tennessee; daughter, Hailey Cox Eddy and husband, John Eddy, of Las Vegas, Nevada; daughter, Brandon Cox Fertig and husband, Dale Fertig, of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and daughter, Leslie Cox Travelstead and husband, David Travelstead, of Indianapolis, Indiana; seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
A graveside service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Rose Hill Cemetery, Marion, Illinois with the Rev. Victor Long officiating. Family and friends are asked to meet directly at the cemetery. Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
