Herrin Frank Paul Frisch Calcaterra, age 89, of Herrin, passed away on Friday, July 23, 2010 at 4:25 P.M. at his home in Herrin.
Frank was born in Herrin on October 16, 1920, the son of Paul and Maria (Porro) Calcaterra. He married Ethel Masters on May 20, 1950 in Herrin and they shared over 56 years of marriage until her passing on June 18, 2006.
Frank joined the Navy in 1942 and served in the Atlantic and Pacific campaigns during World War II, being honorably discharged in 1946. Upon returning to Herrin, he worked and managed the A & P store for 32 years. He then worked for Glens Fine Foods for 10 years before retiring.
Mr. Calcaterra was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin. He was a charter member of the Pigeon Inn Club, Knights of Columbus, and VFW. He enjoyed morning coffee with the boys at Hardees. He was active in the Special Olympics, and a judge in the Bocce tournaments at Herrin Festa. He and his wife were grand marshalls in the Herrin Festa parade in 2004. Frank enjoyed the many family gatherings and spending time with those he loved.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, sister- Angelina Garavalia, and great grandson- Justin Dodd.

Funeral mass will be held at 10:00am on Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin with Monsignor Ken Schaefer officiating. Burial will follow in San Carlo Cemetery with military honors presented by Herrins American Legion and VFW Posts. Visitation will be Monday evening from 5:00 8:00 P.M. at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin.
