Herrin- Frank Lester Speedy Hammonds, 78, of Herrin, passed away at 12:01 PM, Thursday, May 28, 2009 at Herrin Hospital. Frank was born on March 15, 1931 in Herrin to Frank & Madge (Gogue) Hammonds. He married Barbara Hatfield on June 23, 1950 in Energy. She preceded him in death on June 4, 1998. Frank was a US Army veteran and served his country honorably during the Korean War. Once discharged, he returned home and began working at Baudino Buick in Herrin. After that he went to work for Consol coal (formerly Inland Steel) in Sesser and worked as a scoop operator until his retirement in 1992. Frank was a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local #1545 and Community Chapel Church in Marion. He enjoyed fishing and pontooning with his son at the reservoir or Crab Orchard Lake and tinkering with cars and small engines. He once completely restored a cherry red Harley Davidson that was literally brought to him in a bucket. He liked spending time with his children and grandchildren and watching boxing on TV. Survivors include- Daughter- Lessa Lambert & husband Scott of Carterville Son- Terry Lee Hammonds of Zeigler Daughter- Cindy Clover & husband Tim of Herrin Six Grandchildren: Casey Parola & wife Amy of Herrin Megan Lambert of Carterville Ryan Hammonds & wife Jennifer of Herrin Joy Lynn Capogreco of Herrin Amanda L. Clover of Herrin T.J. Clover of Herrin Great Grandchildren- Brycen & Bailey Parola Great Grandchildren- Ethan & Ava Capogreco Several brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws special friend and sister-in-law- Helen Humphrey Several nieces & nephews He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one sister- Lillian Hammonds. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, June 1, 2009 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Rev. Don Colson will officiate. Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-9:00 PM, Sunday, May 31, 2009 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Memorial donations are suggested to the Community Chapel Church in Marion or the American Lung Association and will be accepted at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home/ 201 S. 13th St/ Herrin, IL 62948.
