Herrin- Frederick Earl Fred Schoonover, Jr., 89, of Herrin, passed away peacefully at 9:08 AM, Saturday, September 9, 2006 at Parkway Manor in Marion. Fred was born on March 18, 1917 in Colp to Fred E. & Margaret (McLeod) Schoonover, Sr. He married Nanusha C. Stearns on March 16, 1999 in Piggott, AR. She survives of Herrin. Mr. Schoonover served as Captain during WWII in the US Army. He was wounded in combat and received the Purple Heart and various other medals for his actions. After he was honorably discharged he returned home. He served as Herrins mayor for four years during the late 40s and early 50s. After that he served as Herrins Postmaster for sixteen years prior to his retirement. Fred was an active member of the Herrin First Presbyterian Church. He served as elder, deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was an active member of the Herrin VFW and American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans. He served as chaplain on the VFW/ American Legion ritual team and volunteered many hours at the Marion VA Hospital. Fred enjoyed reading, telling stories and spending time with family and friends. He was truly a people person who never met a stranger. SURVIVORS: Wife- Nanusha Schoonover- Herrin Step Son- Lewis Harold Achuff, III and wife Jaraun- Herrin Step Daughter- Victoria Kathylene Waldrop & husband James- San Antonio, TX Step Grandchildren: Brittany Morgan Rucker- Chester Seth Ryan Coulon- Okinawa Gabrielle Danika Achuff- Okinawa Lane Alexander Waldrop- San Antonio, TX Chase Addison Waldrop- San Antonio, TX Brother- Glen Schoonover Many nieces & nephews He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Eugene & Charles Schoonover and one sister; Hazel Schoonover. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, September 12, 2006 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Rev. Don Colson will officiate. Burial will follow at Blairsville Cemetery after a short Mule drawn procession. Military rites will be performed at graveside by the Herrin VFW and American Legion Posts. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until time of service, Tuesday at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Memorial donations are suggested to the Herrin VFW and American Legion Post Ritual team and will be accepted at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home/ 201 S. 13th St./ Herrin, IL 62948.
