G.W. Watson

Herrin-G.W. WATSON, age 78, of Herrin, passed away at 2:00am on Thursday October 14, 2010 at Herrin Hospital. G.W. was born in Wheatcroft, KY on September 6, 1932, the son of Arch Buckner and Sarah Catherine (Gray) Watson. He married Gloria Jane Janie Phillips in Kingsville, TX on June 18, 1954 and together they shared fifty-two years of marriage until her death on September 20, 2006. After graduating from Wheatcroft High School, G.W. enlisted in the United States Navy where he served from 1951-1955. After his service with the navy, he joined the United States Air Force, which he served from 1955-1963. After his military career, he worked at Franklin-Williamson Human Services for more than 14 years and Allen Industries for more than 21 years. He was a member of the Hurricane Memorial Baptist Church. Survivors include his daughter- Karen Watson of Herrin, IL; two brothers- James C. and Ruth Watson of Evansville, IN; John D. and Jo Watson of Henderson, KY. G.W. was preceded in death by his parents, his wife- Janie, and one sister- Bertha Jane Hill. Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm on Monday, October 18, 2010 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin with Rev. David N. Gilley officiating. Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery with military honors presented by Herrins VFW and American Legion Posts and the National Guard Detail Unit. Visitation will be held from 5-8 pm on Sunday, October 17, 2010 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin.
