Geraldine C. Porter

Herrin- GERALDINE CAROL PORTER, age 70, of Herrin, passed away at 4:50am on Thursday, April 26, 2012 at Barnes-Jewish Extended Care Facility in Clayton, Missouri. Geraldine was born on July 18, 1941in Harvard, Illinois, the daughter of Gordon and Alice (Wegner) Meseck. She attended a one-room school house through sixth grade and graduated from Harvard High School in 1959. She then attended Carthage College where she met and married Thomas Porter. She was a devoted mother to her four daughters. She also worked for many years as a bookkeeper/office manager at Marion Metal and Roofing, Marion Motor Freight and also for Quality Sheet Metals. Geraldine was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Marion. She was a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Herrin where she sang in the choir, and served on the church council and as a past treasurer. Geraldine was involved in numerous organizations, including Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Franklin-Williamson County Mental Health Board, and the Newcomer Alumni Association. She enjoyed her bridge and pinochle groups and enjoyed bowling, reading and traveling. Survivors include four daughters- Laura and Robert Kobrick of Nolensville, TN Melissa and Mark Morley of Carbondale, IL Angela and David Janczak of Makanda, IL Dianna Porter of Carbondale, IL Six grandchildren- Kaci and Abby Wooldridge of Nolensville, TN Alec, Ty, Asher, and Taggart Morley of Carbondale, IL Three sisters- Helen Magnuson of State College, PA Shirley and Leonard Zoellick of Litchfield, IL Alice McCarthy of Marion, IA Sixteen Nieces and Nephews She was preceded in death by her parents, brother- Clarence Meseck, and one sister- Charlotte McComb, two brother-in-laws- Edward Magnuson and Howard McCarthy, and a sister-in-law- Beverly Meseck. Funeral services will be held at 11am on Monday, April 30, 2012 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1801 Westminster St., Marion, IL 62959. Rev. Mark Surburg will officiate. Visitation will be held from 5-8pm on Sunday, April 29, 2012 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Burial will take place at 1:00pm on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at Linn-Hebron Cemetery in Hebron, IL.
