Herrin- Harry L. “Pick” Calcaterra, 86, of Herrin, passed away at 10:10 PM, Monday, July 6, 2015 at Herrin Hospital.
Harry was born on June 21, 1929 in Herrin to Charles and Joan (Marnati) Calcaterra. He attended grade school at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School in Herrin and graduated from Herrin High School. He married Mary Lynne Yano on June 18, 1953 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin. She survives of Herrin.
He enlisted in the United States Marine Corp in Chicago on August 6, 1948. He served his country bravely while stationed in Korea during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant in 1952. Once home, he began a long career in the machine shop at Allen Industries in Herrin. He retired in April of 1984 as the machine shop supervisor.
Pick, as he was known, was an active member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin and the Herrin Knights of Columbus. He was a life member of the Herrin Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Herrin Elks. He was also a member of the Pigeon Inn in Herrin and the Herrin American Legion.
In his spare time, he enjoyed golfing at Pine Lakes Golf Course or travelling with his golfing buddies, Joe Lapinski, Gene Piantanida, Larry Marlow and Harry Wade. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals Fan and a former bowler. He was an accomplished fisherman who often fished Reel Foot Lake and had a bass boat and house boat on Crab Orchard Lake. Pick enjoyed spending time outdoors and had two wonderful gardens, one in Herrin and the other in Metropolis. He spent many hours watching birds and building bird houses and hunting deer and squirrel. Pick had a kind and witty personality and was always up for doing something. He will be dearly missed by his friends and family.

Son- Bruce Calcaterra of Herrin
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers- Charles and Joseph Calcaterra.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, July 9, 2015 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Monsignor Ken Schaefer will officiate. Burial will follow at San Carlo Cemetery in Herrin where military rites will be performed at the graveside by the Herrin American Legion and VFW Posts with assistance from the United States Marine Corps. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until time of service, Thursday, at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin.
