Herrin- Hazel Small, 88, of Herrin, passed away at 4:15 AM, Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion.
Hazel was born on February 28, 1920 in Carterville to Roscoe & Ethel (Throgmorton) Vaughn. She married Fred Small on March 16, 1941 in Cape Girardeau, MO. He preceded her in death on August 20, 2004.
Mrs. Small was a homemaker and formerly worked at South Side school and sold real estate for Albrights in Herrin. She was a lifelong Baptist who attended First Baptist in Herrin and Elm Street Baptist Church in Murphysboro before becoming a member of the Herrin Second Baptist Church. She was an active member of the church when she was able and taught Sunday school. Hazel was also a former member of the Herrin Womens Club, Herrin Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and the Herrin Food Pantry.
Mrs. Small was a loving, and giving person who had a keen sense of humor, even to the end. She enjoyed spending time with her family and reading her Bible. She loved the Lord and her family deeply.

Son & daughter in law- Brian & Sandy Small of Crab Orchard
Daughter- Janice Small of Marion

Sister in law & brother in law- Imogene & Frank Swetland of Murphysboro

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers- Russell, Harold, George, Troy & Robert and sisters- Violet & Eleanor.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, January 31, 2009 at Herrin Second Baptist Church. Rev. Brad Harlow & Dr. Jerry Ford will officiate. Burial will follow at East Lawn Memorial Gardens in Herrin. Visitation will be from 6-9:00 PM, Friday, January 30, 2009 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin.
