Herbert L. Burr Hill, 71, of Carterville, formerly of Marion, passed away at 3:50 AM, Sunday, April 5, 2009 at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
Burr was born on September 16, 1937 in Marion to Herbert & Lorene (McDannel) Hill. After his parents untimely passing, he was raised by his uncle & aunt- Orville & Alberta Hill. He married Shirley Milton on May 9, 1975 in Carterville. She survives of Carterville.
Burr served in the US Navy during peacetime. He was honorably discharged on February 5, 1962. When he was younger he drove trucks for his uncle and then worked a while for Caterpillar in Elgin, IL. He began working in the maintenance department of Olin Corp in the Ordill area on April 1, 1967 and continued working there (it was later renamed Primex) until his retirement on February 1, 2000.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a former member of the American Legion. Burr enjoyed fishing, camping and travel. He was campground host of Hilltop Campground in Goreville for several years. He and Shirley travelled often to Texas and Florida. He camped many years at Crab Orchard Campground. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Nine Great Grandchildren plus three on the way
Brother- Bob Holderfield & wife Shirley of Marion
Brother- Rev. Jim Holderfield & wife Karyle of Carterville
Sister- Sue Rushing of DuQuoin
Several nieces & nephews
He was preceded in death by his parents, uncle & aunt who raised him, grandson- Cory Hill, brother- John and brother in law- William Bill Rushing and sister in law- Ethel Holderfield.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, April 9, 2009 at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion. Rev. Jim Holderfield and Pastor Stephen Palmer will officiate. Burial will follow at Hanks Cemetery in New Dennison. Military rites will be performed at graveside by the Marion VFW & American Legion Posts and the Army National Guard. Visitation will be from 5-9:00 PM, Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home.
