Herrin-Herman "Babes" Garavalia, 90, died 1:00 P.M., Saturday, May 17, 2003 at Herrin Hospital.
Babes was born on April 7, 1913 in Herrin to John B. & Maria (Bollasina) Garavalia. He married Angeline Calcaterra on June 11, 1941 in Herrin. She preceded him in death on June 13, 1996.
Babes was a WWII Army veteran and a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church.
He was owner & operator of Babes Market on South Park Avenue for many years prior to his retirement.
Mr. Garavalia was a lifelong affiliate of the Democratic Party, having once been involved with the committee to elect John F. Kennedy. Babes served the city of Herrin as Alderman since 1977. He was sworn for his last term on May 12, 2003 while in the hospital. He was grand marshal for the Herrinfesta Italiana in 1999 and a member of the Herrin KC's and the Herrin VFW & American Legion Posts.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one sister; Lena Garavalia, and one son in law; Jeff Giles.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, May 21, 2003 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church. Monsignor Ken Schaefer will officiate. Burial will follow at San Carlo Cemetery. The visitation will be from 6-9:00 PM, Tuesday, May 20, 2003 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. The prayer service will be recited at 6:00 PM, Tuesday at the funeral home.
