Carterville- Hershel Howell, Jr, 81, of Carterville, passed away at 5:11 AM, Friday, November 9, 2007 at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale.
Hershel was born on September 19, 1926 in Blairsville, the son of Herschel Lee & Vina Elsie (Copher) Howell. He married Wanda Maxine Hooker on January 28, 1950 in Piggott, Ark. She preceded him in death on June 12, 2002.
Mr. Howell was a WWII Navy Veteran. Hershel worked many years in Refrigerator and Air Conditioning repair, first for Hobart, and then many years for himself. After retirement he worked as a locksmith and he sharpened dog grooming clippers.
He was a longtime member of Community of Faith in Marion. He enjoyed tying flies and fishing the Wolf Creek area of Crab Orchard Lake.

Sister- Mildred Rast of Antioch
Sister & brother in law- Pear & Lester Hancock of Springdale, Ark
Brother & sister in law- Joe & Bernadine Howell of Spokane, WA
Brother- Gene Howell of Apache Junction, AZ
Half Brother- Larry Howell of Murphysboro
Several nieces, nephews and cousins
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and brother- Denny Howell.
The funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM, Monday, November 12, 2007 at Community of Faith Church in Marion. Pastor Todd Greiner will officiate. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until time of service, Monday at Community of Faith Church in Marion. Military rites will be performed at the church by the Herrin VFW & American Legion Posts. After funeral services it is Mr. Howells personal wish to be cremated and scattered by his family at his favorite fishing spot. Funeral and memorial arrangements have been provided by Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin.
