Hubert L. Furr

Chatham- Hubert L. Furr, 79, of Chatham, formerly of Herrin, passed away on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at St. Johns Hospital in Springfield. Hubert was born on November 24, 1931 in Clarksdale, MS to Frank & Laura (Tedford) Furr. He married Marcella I. Hampton on October 22, 1955 in St. Louis, MO. She preceded him in death on June 27, 1999. Hubert was a Korean War veteran and retired from the United States Air Force after twenty two years of courageous service. Once honorably discharged, he began a twenty year career teaching automobile mechanics at Chamberlain High School in Tampa, FL. He was a longtime member of the Marion First Baptist Church. He enjoyed travelling with his family, boating and water sports. Survivors include- Daughter- Janice Ruggiero of Chatham Son- John Furr and wife Kimberly of Chatham Three Grandchildren Sister- Evelyn Scheider of Atlanta, GA He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son in law- Robert Ruggiero and brother- Frank. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, March 28, 2011 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Dr. Bob Dickerson will officiate. Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery with military rites performed at graveside by the Herrin VFW and American Legion Posts and assistance from the Illinois National Guard. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until time of service, Monday, March 28, 2011 at the funeral home.
