Irene Stender

Herrin- Irene Stender, 92, formerly of Energy, died at 6:20 AM, May 27, 2004 at Shawnee Christian Nursing Home in Herrin. Irene was born April 15, 1913 in Worley, McCreary County, Kentucky, the daughter of Oscar and Nora (Adkins) Ross. She married Henry Buzz Stutzman on November 11, 1933. He passed away in 1949. She later married Arnold Stender on August 11, 1954 in Darien, Wisconsin and he preceded her in death on May 1, 1979. She was a retired real estate salesperson who had worked in Elmhurst, Illinois. Prior to that she had worked as a hostess at a resort in northern Illinois and also at a resort in northern Wisconsin. Before working as a hostess she had owned and operated several small restaurants in the Darien/Delavan areas of southern Wisconsin. She was a member of the Second Baptist Church in Herrin. Survivors Include: Sister & brother in law- Glorious Alene & Orville Kuehner of Herrin Two Half Sisters: Perneatta Emily Saraf & husband Michael of Herrin Frances Mariam McArdle & husband Robert of Bellview, IA Half Brother- Edward Smith & wife Dagmar- Murphysboro She was preceded by her parents, husbands, and one brother, Forest Ross. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Rev. Brad Harlow will officiate. Inurnment will follow on Saturday, June 5, 2004, 11:00 AM, at Darien Memorial Cemetery in Darien, WI. Inurnment services have been entrusted to Betzer Funeral Home in Delavan, WI. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to the Herrin Second Baptist Church and will be accepted at the funeral home.
