HERRIN- James Carroll J.C. Davis, age 91, of Herrin, died at 12:08 pm Wednesday April 5, 2006 at Herrin Hospital. James was born July 2, 1914 in Herrin to William G. and Sarah (Sanders) Davis. He married Julia Markus on August 15, 1944 in Carterville and together they shared 61 years of marriage. She survives in Herrin. Mr. Davis retired from Freeman United Coal Company after working over 50 years as a purchasing agent for several Southern Illinois coal companies. He was of Baptist faith. J.C. enjoyed watching sports, especially the St Louis Cardinals and the Herrin Tigers. He served in the Army during World War II as a clerk to the Division Captain. Mr. Davis was decorated with five medals and ribbons while serving in the Philippines in the 78th Engineer Combat Battalion. J.C. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved and cared for many small dogs throughout his life, the last being his beloved chihuahua Poncho. Survivors include- Loving wife- Julia Davis- Herrin, IL 2 Daughters and Son-In-Laws- Cheryl and Ron Kiehna- Chatham, IL Tina and Jim Simpson- Herrin, IL 4 grandchildren- James Carroll Jamie Stratton- Herrin, IL Mia Shaeleen and Mark Fandel- Chatham, IL Lesleigh Ann and Chris Bennett- Lincoln, IL Mariessa Lorae Simpson- Herrin, IL 6 great grandchildren- Morgan, Brayden and Nolan- Chatham, IL Peyton, Christian and Kacey- Lincoln, IL Sister- Carmen Dohanich- Herrin, IL J.C. was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers- Lowell, Bob, Bill, and Everett, and two sisters- Genevive and Evoleen. Funeral services for Mr. Davis will be held at 10:00am on Saturday, April 8, 2006 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin with Rev. Don Colson officiating. Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery with military rites performed by Herrins American Legion and VFW Posts. Visitation will be held from 6-8pm on Friday April 7, 2006 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to the Williamson County Humane Society.
