Herrin- Jack A. Walker, 93, of Herrin, passed away at 3:25 p.m., Saturday, January 9, 2010 at his home. Jack was born on May 26, 1916 in Herrin to Raymond & Ursie (Smith) Walker. He married Mary Elizabeth Will on February 10, 1937 in Herrin. She preceded him in death on May 3, 2007. Jack fought bravely as a United Stated Marine stationed in the pacific theatre during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1943. Once stateside, Jack worked tirelessly for his family. He worked simultaneously as a letter carrier for the US Postal service in Herrin and as a truck driver for Bonafield Trucking in Herrin. Prior to that he owned and operated 333 Service Station in Herrin which was formerly located where the Park Avenue Motel is now. He was a longtime member of Bryan St. Baptist Church in Herrin and a member of Herrin Prairie Lodge AF & AM. When he had free time he drove people in need to various appointments in and out of the region. He enjoyed working hard in his garage, cutting grass, collecting items at yard sales and spending time with his family and his dogs. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the angels of Hospice of Southern Illinois. Survivors include- Daughter- Jackie McNew and husband Butch of Herrin Son- Bill Walker and wife Linda of Cherryville, NC Daughter- Judy Brandon of Herrin Daughter in law- Judy Walker Coultas and husband Joe of Woodlawn Ten Grandchildren: Mary Catherine Reynolds of Carbondale Judy Reynolds of Herrin Christopher Reynolds of Herrin Doug Brandon and wife Tara of Herrin Tammy Wallace of Cherryville, NC Scott Walker and wife Alisha of Marion, VA Mark Walker and wife Julie of Carlyle, IL Susan Heseman and husband Pat of Nashville, IL Jennifer Pelker and husband Jim of Tamaroa, IL Becky Gordon of Carbondale Thirteen Great Grandchildren: Jennifer, Anthony, Emily & Olivia Jenna, Matthew, Libby & Haeli Quentin, Hannah and Abbie, Jason and Jessica Three Great Great Grandchildren Niece- Linda Wright of Murphysboro Cousin- Cleo Duncan of Herrin Caregiver- Ruby Arview of Thomspsonville He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son- Roger Walker, son in law- Gary Brandon, grandchildren- Tony Walker and Joe Reynolds, grandson in law- William Wallace, two sisters- Jeanette Minton and Imogene Walker and one brother- James Walker. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Rev. Duane Faulkenberry and Monsignor Ken Schaefer will officiate. Burial will follow at San Carlo Cemetery in Herrin with military rites provided by the Herrin VFW and American Legion Posts. Visitation will be from 6-8:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Memorial donations are suggested to Bryan Street Baptist Church and will be accepted at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home/ 201 S. 13th St. / Herrin, IL 62948.
