Herrin- Jackie D. Smith, age 81, of Herrin, passed away at 3:30am on Friday, March 1, 2013 at Herrin Hospital. Jackie was born in Johnston City on June 30, 1931, the son of Obid and Ione (Seyler) Smith.  He married Loudema “Sandy” Smith and she preceded him in death.  He later married Betty (Robertson) Culbreath on June 26, 1999 at the White Ash Freewill Baptist Church.  Betty survives in Herrin. Mr. Smith attended the White Ash Freewill Baptist. He was a member of the Herrin Chamber of Commerce, Eagles, Elks, Jaycees, and Merchant Club.  He worked as Administrator of General Assistance and Manager of Rechtor Brothers. After retirement, he sold used cars. Survivors include his wife- Betty (Culbreath) Smith of Herrin; Daughter- Linda and Jim Miller of Herrin; Son- Mark and Shelly Smith of Herrin; Daughter- Karen and Dale Patterson of Carterville; Daughter- Lee Foster of Knoxville, Iowa; Step Son- Brian and Dana Culbreath of Herrin; Step Son-in-law- Everett Pedigo of Herrin; Grandchildren- Jodi and Mike Seely of Herrin, Randi Miller of Herrin, Shandra and Mitchell Gosha of Herrin, Britton Miller of Herrin, Angel and Eric Petterson of Burlington, Iowa; Step Grandchildren- Amber and Shane Wiggs of Herrin, Tyler and Nikki Pedigo of Herrin, and Corey, Katy, and Caleb Culbreath of Herrin; Great Grandchildren- Ashley and Jason Rimini of Carterville, Kaci Woodcock and Cody Jones of Marion, Corie Woodcock of Herrin, Rachel Petterson of Knoxville, Iowa; Great Great Grandchildren- Evan Wiggs, Mason Wiggs, Kalli Jones, Mason Rimini, Madeline Rimini, Carter Galbraith, Carsyn Galbraith, Aidan Miller, Ryley Gosha, Raegen Gosha, Gunter Gosha, Bronson Nesler, and Breanna Nesler; Sister- Janet and Jack Seibert of Plumsteadville, PA; sister-in-laws- Ann and Lyman Tanner, June and Frank Baker, and Margie and Rick Pedigo; brother-in-laws- Rick and Rhonda Robertson and Robert Wortham. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife- Loudema “Sandy” Smith,  step-daughter- Debbie Pedigo, Great granddaughter- Braelyn Nesler, and brother- Kenneth Smith. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Herrin Ambulance Service drivers- Adam Harris, Adam Gossett, and Adam Estes for all their kindness.  A special thank you also to the special friends and workers, and Jackie’s favorite worker- Gary, at Shawnee Christian Nursing Center for your kindness and special care. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm on Sunday, March 3, 2013 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin with Rev. Andy Lee officiating.  Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from noon to 2:00pm on Sunday, March 3, 2013 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. For those who prefer, memorial donations may be made to the White Ash Freewill Baptist Church.
