James E. Jim Fox, 92, passed away on Saturday, November 1, 2008 at 9:05 P.M. at Shawnee Christian Nursing Center in Herrin. Jim was born May 12, 1916 in Jackson County, Illinois the son of George W. & Minerva Jane (Lancaster) Fox. He married Mary Etherton on January 16, 1937 in New Madrid, Missouri, and together they shared over 59 years of marriage until her death on June 9, 1996. Prior to his retirement Jim, along with his wife Mary, were the owners of Foxs Laundry in Marion. He was a member of Third Baptist Church. A native of Carbondale, Illinois, he loved hunting, fishing, and the outdoors. He excelled at football and was co-captain of the 1935 district championship Carbondale Terriers, winning honorable mention on the all-state honor team. In later life, he became an avid rockhound and was active in the Southern Illinois Earth Science Club until he died. Survivors include: Nieces; Emily Fox-Hill and husband Charles of Memphis, TN Judy Leonard and husband Robert of Carden City, MI Jane Owens of Canton, MI Jenny Pinto of Las Vegas, NV Nephews; Paul Gene Fox James Owens and wife Rochelle of Ann arbor, MI William Etherton and wife Judy of Dongola Jim Etherton of Dongola Bob Etherton and wife Georgette of Germantown, TN Ronald Casmere and wife Bonnie of Texas Michael Losacco and wife Karen of Howell, MI Sisters-in-law; Ruby Owens of Livonia, MI Mickey Etherton of Dongola Trusted Friend Lucille Biggs of Carbondale Special thanks to Jennifer Berry and the staff of Shawnee Christian Nursing Care Center. Funeral services will be Friday, November 7, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion with Pastor Scott Kallem officiating. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery in Carbondale. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 5:00 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. For those who prefer memorials may be made to the Southern Illinois Earth Science Club. Envelopes will be available and accepted at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home, 800 North Market Street, Marion, IL 62959.
