James "Jim" William McHargue went home peacefully to be with the Lord on Friday, April 28, 2023 at midnight surrounded by his wife and sons. Jim was born in Herrin on July 29, 1949 to James Matthew and Edna Louise (Young) McHargue. Jim was employed by Wilbert Vault Company; he was a greens keeper for several area golf courses and operated McHargue's Reel Service from his home. Finally, he worked for the City of Herrin.
Jim married Roberta Bates on November 20, 1987. He is survived by his wife, Roberta of Herrin, sons James Dale (Nena) McHargue and Paul Matthew (Sarah) McHargue. Grandchildren, Maddie and Molly McHargue and great-granddaughter, Cora.
Also surviving are his step-grandchildren Rikki (Donovan) Cook and their children Rali and Riggs, Nicole Hodson, Heather (Caanan) Arant and their children Grayson, Oliver and Elliana and Jacob and Heidi Bush.
Sister, Jerrie Lynn Barnett of Herrin and Brother Steven (Kay) McHargue of Marion. He also had numerous nieces, nephews and close cousins whom he loved.
In his younger years, Jim liked to race dirt bikes with his brother, Steven. Also, along with his dad and brother, Jim enjoyed talking to his friends on the CB radio, his handle was Pioneer. He was a sprint car enthusiast and he enjoyed fishing and flying drones. In true McHargue spirit, he enjoyed yard work and always tried to keep a meticulous lawn. Jim kept the family updated on the weather and could usually forecast better than the local meteorologists.
Although Jim wasn't large in stature, he was mighty in the Lord and he was a strong prayer partner with his sister, Jerrie. When his health permitted he attended church at Union Gospel Mission in Herrin.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Phyllis Ann McHargue Sanders, stepson Victor Endicott, stepdaughter, Shellie Hodson and brother in law, Bill Barnett.
Our family would like to thank the neighbors, Chris and Crystal Haught and Carey and Marsha Russell for their help during Jim's illness. Their support was very much appreciated.
A private viewing will be held for the family members on Monday, May 1, 2023 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin, followed by a public graveside service at Herrin City Cemetery at 1:00 pm with Pastor Robert Jilek officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
