Herrin- Jewell M. Steckenrider, 90, of Herrin, passed away at 9:45 PM, Thursday, March 16, 2006 at Parkway Manor in Marion.
Jewell was born on November 26, 1915 in Elmo, MO to Carroll H. & Helen (Kimzey) Medlin. She married John Eaton in 1937 in Carbondale. He preceded her in death in 1941. Later, she married Louis L.V. Steckenrider by proxy while he was stationed in the Philippines during WWII. Due to the time differences from being married over the telephone, they actually shared two different dates of marriage, he on June 21, 1945 and Jewell, who was in Florida, on June 22, 1945. He preceded her in death on December 13, 2004.
Mrs. Steckenrider was a retired school teacher, having taught at Lincoln School in Herrin for twenty-two years. She was an active member of the Herrin First Presbyterian Church. She served within the church as deacon, elder and as a member of the Womens Association. She also volunteered her time with the Herrin Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and Beta Sigma Phi.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother; Elmer Medlin, and one son in law; Joe Pierson.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, March 20, 2006 at Herrin First Presbyterian Church. Pastor Michael Neubert will officiate. Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until time of service, Monday at the church. Funeral services are being provided by Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin.
