Herrin- Joe Castrale, 89, of Herrin, formerly of Johnston City, passed away peacefully at 3:50 PM, Thursday, June 4, 2015 at Reflections in Carterville.
Joe was born on February 1, 1926 in Johnston City to Peter and Margherita (Castrale) Castrale. He married Geneva Pollack on February 28, 1955 in McLeansboro. She preceded him in death on July 22, 2007. He was a veteran who drove a truck for the US Army in Italy and other theatres during WWII. Once honorably discharged, he returned home and began his career as a teacher.
Joe was retired as a longtime educator and principal at Washington Grade School in Johnston City. He was a coach for many years at the grade school and also high school. The gym at Washington Grade School was named “Joe Castrale Gymnasium” in his honor. He had a very positive outlook on life and situations and passed that on to his students and other educators.
In his spare time, he enjoyed racing pigeons and spending time outdoors in his vegetable garden or hunting rabbits, quail or squirrels with his prized dogs. He loved to follow the St. Louis Cardinals and was a huge fan of the Johnston City Indians. He was a skilled checkers player who rarely lost and would graciously congratulate his opposition for coming in second place.
Joe was a longtime member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin and before that at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Johnston City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, daughter- Rebecca Ann Castrale, mother in law- Johanna Pollack, brother- Baptista Castrale and sister- Rita (Castrale) Fisera.
A funeral mass will be held at 1:00 PM, Monday, June 15, 2015 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin. Monsignor Ken Schaefer will officiate. Burial will follow at San Carlo Cemetery in Herrin where military rites will be performed by the Herrin VFW and American Legion Posts with assistance from the Illinois National Guard. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until time of service, Monday, June 15, 2015 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin. Funeral arrangements were made at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin.
